With the exception of the final Ad Astra post and possible corrections, all submissions to the Star Chart newsletter are now closed. Thank you for submitting content to the newsletter team and for helping make Chicon 8 a wonderful experience!
On the last day of Chicon 8, September 5th, 2022, the convention had 3,574 warm bodies on site. Grand total membership was 6,500, more than Chicon 7!
Chicon 8 may be over, but for many of our members, so many wonderful memories were made in five short days. And as the Chengdu committee reminded us during the closing ceremony, welcoming us in song to celebrate Worldcon 2023, we have a lot to look forward to as a community. Fan from 2012 Found! A team of Star Chart roving reporters, following up on rumors from hotel staff, located a long-lost fan from Chicon 7. Keith Pavane from Chelm, Ohio had been wandering the tunnels underneath the Hyatt since the 2012 convention in search of the elusive Stagg Field room. The Chicon 8 Masquerade was held on September 3rd, 2022 in the Grand Ballroom of the Chicago Hyatt Regency. As with previous Worldcons, the show began with a presentation of the entries, accompanied by wonderfully entertaining introductions by master of ceremonies, William Dezoma. The presentation was followed by an amazing performance by local Chicago group Raks Geek, who astounded the audience with skillful light-spinning, spooky contortion acts, and graceful wookies. Sunday’s Site Selection (Second Main) WSFS Business Meeting received the site selection results for the 2024 Worldcon and the 2023 NASFiC (separate report forthcoming) and received a presentation from the 2023 Chengdu Worldcon before taking up new constitutional amendments. Fifth Third Bike the Drive is a fundraiser event for the Active Transportation Alliance, a non-profit advocacy organization working to improve conditions for walking, biking, and public transit throughout Chicagoland. This event is from 6:30 am – 10:30 am with a Festival from 8 am – 12:30 pm. The main location is Butler Field in Grant Park.
